Maintaining Your Watermaker

The Watermaker aboard your boat, like your engines, is a fine piece of modern engineering and, just like your engines, regular maintenance is a must to keep it operating at peak performance.

Many watermakers are overlooked as a regular maintenance item and are only given attention when they stop! They may have failsafe sensors to shut them down under high pressure or if filters are blocked, but this is a far from ideal reminder to look at the equipment.

Just as you would check the oil in an engine, owners and skippers should become familiar with the operating parameters of their watermaker and change filters or book a service accordingly.

When a watermaker is serviced correctly, it will provide 10 and more years of trouble-free operation making pure, life giving water. A few of the basics are:

  • Change filters at around 18psi input / output pressure

  • Regularly check seawater strainer

  • Fresh water flush every week even if not used

  • Change pump oil after first 50 hours, then every 500 hours or one year

  • Chemically clean the membrane every year

  • Chemically winterise the system if it not being used for three or more months

If you are not sure of your system’s health is or if you require a service, please call or email R Desalination service technicians. They will happily bring you up to date on what is required to keep your system running smoothly and reliably or book in a service for you.
