Riviera reveal exciting new 51 Flybridge design and propulsion option

Riviera's popular 51 Series II Flybridge models now feature a sensational new flybridge design and the exciting new IPS propulsion option, offering enhanced performance and increased storage.

Following extensive testing in the United States, these models are now available with triple Volvo Penta IPS drive systems; however both 51 Open and Enclosed Flybridge models will continue to be offered with shaft drive.

The triple Volvo Penta IPS drives are especially advantageous for fishermen as the two outer engines can be shut down,  thus allowing for extremely economical trolling using the centre engine on its own.

The ever popular Riviera 51 flybridge with more than 170 of these classy three cabin cruisers already on the water and proven the world over has been relaunched at the Sydney International Boat Show with an extremely luxurious new flybridge design and an exciting new power system.

The Riviera 51 Flybridge with triple IPS600 has a main amidships fuel tank capacity of 3300 litres.  The 51 has a cruising range of 425 nautical miles at a speed of 31 knots.  Maximum speed for the boat at a half load condition of 23.3 tonnes is 34 knots.

However, in inclement weather a cruise speed of 20 knots will give an extended range of 460 nautical miles.

The IPS powered option features an entirely new hull, developed by Riviera's design team in consultation with Volvo Penta senior designers. Dead rise at the transom is 15 degrees.

The IPS system features drive units mounted aft in the lazarette, each with two forward-facing, counter-rotating propellers. The entire drive unit turns to steer the boat and all units can act independently, providing finger-tip control in slow-speed manoeuvres through a joystick mounted at the helm.

The 51 Flybridge with triple Volvo Penta IPS has undergone extensive testing in the United States over an extended 24 month period. This has allowed Riviera's New Product Development team to learn a great deal about IPS technology and to realise the propulsion system's full potential.

The system also offers impressive acceleration and performance. According to Volvo Penta, the efficiency of the new system also delivers fuel economy and low noise levels.

"During the development work and the continuous tests that we perform, the system has exceeded our expectations time and time again," said Volvo Penta President Göran Gummeson.  "Boat performance is boosted to a new level."

The new propulsion option builds on the features of the Riviera 51 Flybridge Series II model launched at the 2008 Sydney International Boat Show.

The Enclosed flybridge has an all new layout. It has an impressive new wrap-around helm with an upholstered dark grey vinyl helm peak while the lower section is finished in a soft touch dark grey paint and features directional air-conditioning outlets for the windscreen and two free standing Pompanette Golden helm chairs.

The helm's unique design provides ample room for electronics including the IPS joy stick as well as a glove box and drink holders.  Below the helm is a bank of drawers and locker doors giving access into the peck of the flybridge.  On the starboard side there is additional storage cabinetry finished in high gloss timber while on the port side there is a large inner-sprung lounge with a storage drawer for glassware under the aft seat.

Riviera concept design manager, Neil McCabe said they set out to create a more social seating arrangement around the helm.

"With the long luxurious lounge starting next to the captain helm seat and flowing aft around the centrally positioned folding gloss timber table, there is a real feeling of space and comfort while the captain remains firmly connected to the gathering even under way. At rest the two helm seats can rotate around, the table folded open and the party continues," he said.

"Behind the lounge and to the port side of the aft docking station is the wet bar.  It has a solid surface benchtop, mould in sink and drink holders, stainless steel single drawer bar fridge, a rubbish bin and bottle storage beneath a hinging lid."

The enclosed flybridge featuring teak timber floors has a very light and open feeling accompanied by cross ventilation from the sliding side windows, two large sliding hatches in the hardtop and opening hatch directly above the captain's helm seat.

"The optional extended bow rail provides added security when walking around the side decks.

"In the cockpit there is an additional Volvo joy stick control unit which makes mooring a breeze."

An option offers crew's quarters including bunk and a fully-equipped bathroom. Access to the space is via a door from the cockpit. There is also an option to provide a second access via a hatch in the saloon. The space includes the boat's genset, air conditioning units and battery banks, offering very easy servicing. It is also used to access the front of the three Volvo Penta IPS engines.

Main access to the engines is via the hinged cockpit floor that lifts on an electric actuator.

The fuel tank is forward, immediately behind the accommodation bulkhead, offering low noise in the accommodation area.

Spacious queen double beds feature in both the midships master and forward guest staterooms while cedar timber lining offers freshness to all the cabin lockers.

The bathrooms have the warmth of Amtico timber veneer flooring, solid surface benchtops with porcelain basins and satin chrome shower poles.

All the joinery in the saloon has a fresh look and there is even a gloss timber surround to the recessed grabrail in the headliner.

Speakers for the Bose entertainment system are recessed in stylish pelmets on either side of the saloon.

The lounge has a double bed hidden away underneath that deploys with electric controls.

But perhaps the most striking feature of the saloon of the 51 Enclosed Flybridge is the awning window and stainless steel door aft leading to the cockpit. The awning window opens up to connect the saloon with the cockpit.

The Open model retains the sliding bulkhead window and a ladder from cockpit to flybridge.
