Riviera raises Jolly Roger in support of Childhood Cancer

Donning eye patches, hooks and some nautical clothing, Riviera staff brought out their treasure chests to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Support Group during the annual Talk like a Pirate Day last month.

Getting into the spirit of the day was event organisor Annette Bemrose who spent most of the day pillaging pieces of eight from fellow employees to raise more than $300.

Riviera warehouse leading hand Denis Lawton suggested the fundraiser and the idea took off.

"I heard about International Talk like a Pirate Day about three or four years ago and thought it would be a great fundraiser for Riviera to be involved in," said Denis.

"It's a good cause and also a great morale booster, we had a blast."

Warehouse staff set up a cardboard ship complete with Jolly Roger and canon and enjoyed a morning tea on the dock.

They also held a raffle with six prizes generously donated from staff members and local businesses.

In its third year, International Talk like a Pirate Day is held annually on September 19 and to date has raised about $70,000 to provide counseling, accommodation and financial support for local families.

Childhood Cancer Support group was formed in 1975 by a group of parents who had children with childhood cancer in a bid to keep families together and alleviate some of the stress and financial burden during this harrowing time.
