For a man who made his fortune printing labels for wine bottles pure bliss is not some raucous social event, but rather being out on the open ocean alone and he’s just spent approximately $5 million to satisfy his passion.
For Peter Teakle there’s nothing much better than life on the ocean wave with a fishing rod in hand and crab pots strategically placed. His dream boat, a $6 million Riviera 70 enclosed flybridge, is being meticulously fitted out so he can fulfill that desire more often than not by himself.
Based on Hamilton Island after selling his Adelaide based printing business several years back, Peter has been a boatie all his life.
“I love just being out there by myself, no advertising signs, no sirens, no traffic, no speed limits and more often than not nobody else on board to disturb the solitude,” he said.
Peter has covered more than 40,000 nautical miles in his boats and he estimates that about 30 percent of that time has been single-handed.
His Riviera 70, the flagship of the fleet, is a real super yacht with four large cabins and bathrooms, a saloon that looks more like a penthouse apartment, and five separate entertainment systems onboard making her the ideal vessel to share with friends.
“I will certainly enjoy entertaining and there will be no shortage of friends to take out, but there will be many days when I will simply walk down to the marina, throw off the mooring lines and take her out by myself,” he said.
He started his boating life with a 23-foot trailer boat at his home in Port Lincoln.
The Riviera 70 is a dream come true for Peter and it is being fitted out with everything imaginable including bow and stern thrusters and controls so simple a child could manoeuvre it.
Peter’s boat is being set up to allow for extended periods of living aboard with a back-up for all the important systems.
There will be two water-makers, two generators for mains electricity, fibre-optic cabling for all electrical and electronic systems and even special air conditioning systems designed to keep the electronics onboard cool.
“I have very high expectations for this boat and I know Riviera will deliver,” he said.
